This week, King’s was visited by scholar, philosopher, and poet Dr. Jan Zwicky for the Alex Fountain Memorial Lecture.

Zwicky’s celebrated poetry and philosophical works seek to understand “lyric comprehension” — the process that is involved in humming a tune without knowing the notes or seeing a face in the leaves of a tree. It is a way of understanding “highly integrated wholes” — gestalts — and defying the analytic tendency to dissect, separate, and evaluate.

Shortly before she gave her lecture, Discuss, in partnership with the Dalhousie Gazette, was lucky enough to sit down with Dr. Zwicky for a conversation on her poetic method, her groundbreaking philosophy, and how lyric thinking can help the human race go down with dignity.
