Get out

Do you ever feel like you really just need a break? It could be from school, work or maybe you just need to get out of the house. Well, you’re in luck! I’ve journeyed through rain and shine — and more rain —to narrow down some of the best spots to get you out of your funk! They’re all just a short bus ride away, so really, what’s stopping you?

Chocolate Lake:

Chocolate Lake is a popular location in the summer and fall months. Just a 25 minute ride from campus on the number 14 bus, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing day trip with friends or even just a break between assignments. Along with the beach there’s a basketball court, tennis court and washroom and shower facilities on site. The best part: once you’re finished lounging on the beach you can take a walk around the lake to the Best Western Plus hotel to enjoy a few drinks on the lakeside patio.

Herring Cove:

For some great fall hiking, head on down to Herring Cove, located about an hour’s bus ride on route 20 from the Mumford Terminal. From the bus stop, you’ll want to head down highway 253 past Now We’re Cookin (the home of some of the best pizza you can get your hands on) for a 15 minute walk to the the provincial park entrance. From there, you can enjoy the beautiful sights that the hike has to offer, but be warned: the slippery and rocky terrain can make this hour-long hike difficult, so come prepared with the right shoes.

York Redoubt:

Looking for a little history in your life? York Redoubt is the perfect location to learn about some of Nova Scotia’s history, and a great location for exploring with friends. Just 30 minutes from the Mumford Terminal on route 15, the route will end just down the road from the park. Inside you can enjoy the historic buildings as well as views of the ocean and forest surroundings. Maintenance on the park stops after Labour Day and doesn’t start up again until spring, so be careful when you’re walking through the park, and try to keep it clear of mess once you leave.
