The early sixteenth century saw the rise of reformation movements questioning the role of the Church in the spiritual lives of individuals. At the forefront of this debate were two figures, Martin Luther and Desiderius Erasmus, powerful intellectuals who locked horns over the question of free will and clerical authority.
In this episode of Discuss., John Last is joined by Dr. Ron Haflidson and Dr. Neil Robertson, two professors from the Early Modern Studies department at King’s, to discuss the enduring influence of these figures.
Dr. Haflidson teaches the EMSP 4000 core course on political thought in the Early Modern Period, and tutors in FYP. Next term, he will be teaching a course on the origins and political thought of fascism for upper-year students.
Dr. Robertson is a longstanding professor in the EMS programme and teaches the 2000-level core course, Structures of the Modern Self. This year, he is also coordinating the Honours Seminar for Early Modern Studies students, on aesthetics.
