Summer Reading List

1–2 minutes

As the winter semester winds down, it’s time for warmer weather. Summer brings picnics, patios, beach days and time to unwind from the stress of the academic year. Reading is one of the best ways to relax and take some time for yourself.

The Watch has compiled a list of books that are best enjoyed under the sun. These books are light, summery and perfect to read on a lazy afternoon.

Slow days, fast company: The World, The flesh, and L.A. by Eve Babitz

A beautiful portrait of Southern California through short stories. Babitz is an icon.

Happy Hour by Marlowe Granados

Two best friends spend the summer in New York City. Glamorous prose and magnetic characters.

Summer by Ali Smith

Perfectly capturing the nostalgia and changing emotions that come with summer, this book is the epitome of its title. This is a part of Smith’s seasonal quartet, but you don’t need to have read the rest to enjoy this one.

Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth

We could read this book a million times. A coming of age story about first love, set in rural Ireland.

The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

Elin Hilderbrand is the queen of beach reads. This book is impeccably entertaining, and you’ll likely finish it in one sitting.

Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion

It seems a bit obvious to recommend Joan Didion to King’s students… But this is a classic and Didion never misses.
