The Watch Magazine welcomes pitches and submissions from students at the University of King’s College and Dalhousie University. Writers of all levels are encouraged to pitch us ideas. We will work with you to create work that is ready for to be published.
Pitches can be submitted at the bottom of this page.
Our Process
The Watch is always open to pitches and submissions from students at the University of King’s College and Dalhousie University.
To make sure your pitch/submission is filed on time, you must pitch us by the first Friday of each month of publication.
You can pitch us by emailing watcheditors@gmail.com and publisherthewatch@gmail.com, or coming to our contributor meetings, the dates of which can be found on our instagram.
Once we have accepted your submission, you will be added to a Google Drive, where you will submit your work by 5pm on the second Tuesday of that same month.
Your piece will go through three stages of edits before it is put into the magazine. Whenever time permits, we will do our best to ask you to restructure/edit your piece if it needs reworking, rather than do it ourselves. However, The Watch reserves the right to edit your work, especially as we are on tight deadlines. Edits are done on one document, which you can access, to maintain transparency.
Your story will be published in print and online.
We are always happy to go over edits with contributors. Don’t hesitate to contact us.
Content Preferences
The Watch is proud to be catered exclusively to the community at the University of King’s College. As such, we try to ensure our content is representative of the interests and culture of our target audience. Because we write towards a very specific niche, we can be highly selective as to what kinds of stories and subjects we cover.
We believe that local journalism is essential for representing communities. As such, we try to cover campus news, covering topics like the King’s Student Union, the administration, academic programs, etc. We are not interested in covering provincial, national, or global news stories, unless they have a specific and direct tie to King’s.
This section focuses on the events, announcements, people and projects that emerge from the vibrant arts and culture scene at King’s, including bands, theatre, film, profiles, events, initiatives, societies, and more. It falls under the News section. We are not interested in broader stories in arts and culture, unless they have a specific and direct tie to King’s.
This section takes a closer look at topics of interest to the King’s community. They can be in-depth researched narratives, practical guides, visual stories, explainers, or themed pieces that explore specific topics. We are interested in personal perspectives, arguments, and reflections on campus culture, or broader topics related to interests of the King’s community.
The Look
This fashion column highlights the every-day outfits of students at King’s. We have a photographer that takes photos of students, with their explicit permission, on campus. We encourage you to submit your own photos. They are more likely to be selected if they are taken on a camera. We will not publish selfies.
This section includes opinion articles, op-eds, and letters to the editor. Unlike news writing, which aims for neutrality, opinion writing embraces personal voices, rhetorical styles, and persuasive writing. We are interested in personal perspectives, arguments, and reflections on campus culture, or broader topics related to interests of the King’s community.
This section gives topics a twist of humour, parody, exaggeration or more. It should make us laugh, think, or both. Again, these pieces should be related to campus culture, or broader topics related to interests of the King’s community.
Visual Design
The Watch executive members design the magazine’s layout and covers. We are always open to ideas for design.
Covers
Our covers are stylized and try to use creative elements. They are usually designed around a theme that is related to the month of publication. We avoid using human features in our covers, focusing instead on objects or art. We are open to cover idea pitches. While we may accept cover submissions point-blank, we suggest that you come to us first to talk about your idea, to ensure you include standard details and the direction of our executive team. Contact us here!
Layout
We welcome students who are interested in supporting the design of our layout. To design our layout, we use Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator. Contact us if you are interested.
