Letter from the executive team

Today we were asked to make a retraction to the piece Conveniently Brown: an op-ed to help protect the well-being and reputation of one of the staff members involved.

We received an email last night from Adriane Abbott, asking us to meet sometime today, and further letting us know that the meeting had nothing to do with the “nature” of the op-ed.

Once we arrived at the meeting, Abbott requested that we remove the name of an employee of the advancement office included in the op-ed.

She explained to us the hurt that has been felt through the office, and expressed her regrets to the way in which people were made to feel when reading the op-ed.

Ultimately the request was brought forward to protect the reputation of this employee, especially since Abbott felt that they were not at fault, as they were just following her request.

We chose to do this because we felt that it would be the best option for everyone involved, and wanted to ensure that we were causing as minimal damage to anyone’s reputation as possible. Especially someone who was not at fault.

If there are any concerns or questions about this decision, feel free to send us an email at [email protected] or [email protected]
