Over the next few weeks, we’ll be releasing special editions of the podcast, Discuss. Extra, that will feature interviews with expert guests on topics not included in FYP.
What is the media? What is technology? Today, we may superficially understand these concepts, but already in the 1960’s one prophetic philosopher was engaging with these questions in ways that would predict the direction of society to come.
Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan appeared on the philosophical scene as a rockstar metaphysician, conducting interviews with Playboy and drawing the ridicule and skepticism of many of his peers. Despite this criticism, McLuhan’s ideas continue to resonate half a century later, in a world of ever faster communication and connectivity.
Dr. Matthew Furlong has tutored in FYP and lectured on McLuhan, and joins host John Last to discuss McLuhan’s cult of celebrity, fall from fame, and lasting significance to our understanding of the modern world.
Discuss. is a co-production of CKDU Radio and the Watch Magazine.
