At a time when the university is wringing its hands over dropping enrolment and the value of a liberal arts degree is called ever more into question, studies are now suggesting part of the problem may be the male-dominated curriculum of most philosophy departments. Third-year student Meg Shields has a suggestion — make FYP more gender representative.
Through her blog Would Be Women of FYP, Shields and her contributors propose an alternative curriculum of female figures in the history of Western thought that she hopes will one day be included alongside Aristotle, Dante, and Freud.
In this week’s Discuss. Extra, Shields joins John Last to discuss the politics of gender representation in the university — and how FYP might be made more feminist friendly.
Discuss. is a co-production of the Watch Magazine and CKDU Radio.
